Maintenance Instructions for your
Prometheus Desktop Humidor, Optima Humidifier and Special Care Solution

Congratulations on your purchase of a Prometheus Desktop Humidor. We have taken great care in the design, manufacture and outfitting of your model to ensure that it gives you years of dependable and enjoyable usage.

Please review the brief instructions that follow to ensure that your Prometheus Desktop Humidor is properly maintained to ensure that your cigars are properly housed, humidified and stored for your enjoyment.

(1) How to Install the Prometheus Humidifier and Humidify Your Prometheus Humidor

(A) Your Prometheus Optima Humidifier has been pre-treated with our Special Care Solution . Do not open the sealed plastic bag containing the humidifier until it is ready to be used.

When you are ready to humidify your humidor, open the sealed plastic bag and carefully take out the humidifier. Place the humidifier in an open container filled with about a half-inch of Distilled Water and allow it to soak up the water. This will energize the humidifying foam inside the plastic case and begin the humidifying action. Soaking the humidifier in a container is the most effective way to activate your humidifier and will also minimize the amount of Distilled Water required.

However, if you wish, you can also apply Distilled Water into the humidifier directly by pouring it in through the slots on the front side.

After adding Distilled Water by either method, wait for the water to overfill the humidifier. Then shake off the excess water, lay the humidifier on a paper towel to allow drainage, then carefully wipe the exterior of the humidifier with a paper towel. Then you are ready to attach the humidifier to the interior magnets which are preinstalled on the interior lid of your humidor.

(B) Prometheus Desktop Humidors come with a complementary digital hygrometer/thermometer already included. Attach it to the pre-installed magnets on the interior lid of the humidor.

(C) Monitor the humidity level daily. The humidity level should stabilize at 70% within five days.

(D) Once the relative humidity level reaches 70%, you can put your cigars into the humidor. If, for any reason, you are not going to use your humidor for an extended period, store your Prometheus Optima Humidifier in a zip-lock bag in order that it retain a minimum level of moisture. Otherwise, the interior foam will dry up so severely that it will not absorb Distilled Water effectively in the future.

(2) Maintaining Proper Humidification

(A) Your cigars will taste best if they are kept in the environment which provides a Relative Humidity range of 68 - 70% and temperature range of 68 - 70 degrees Fahrenheit (20 - 21 degrees Celsius). If your cigars go through harsh temperature and humidity variations, they can lose their flavor, texture and ease of draw. All Prometheus humidors equipped with a Prometheus Optima Humidifier provide an optimally controlled environment (Relative Humidity of 68% - 70%) for your cigars.

(B) Please check the humidity level and your priceless cigar collection in your humidor regularly. If the humidity drops below 68%, add distilled water to the Prometheus Optima Humidifier . We recommend applying Distilled Water to the Optima humidifier about once a month.

(C) Once every six months, apply Prometheus Special Care Solution (Prometheus SCS) to the Optima humidifier so that it can continuously generate humidity effectively. You can purchase Prometheus Special Care Solution (Prometheus SCS) from our authorized dealers or from our web site.

(D) If the humidity level rises above 72% and remains there, remove the Prometheus Optima Humidifier, store it in a zip-lock bag and re-close the humidor without the humidifier inside. Because of the high quality of the seal on every Prometheus humidor, it will lose its interior humidity quite slowly. When the interior humidity drops back below 70%, then re-insert the Prometheus Optima Humidifier back into the humidor.

(E) It's important to check the humidification level of the cigars you are storing inside your humidor regularly. You can do this with the included Prometheus digital hygrometer/thermometer, which accurately measures both the humidity and temperature in your humidor. Detailed instructions on how to use it are enclosed inside the packaging box. USER MANUAL (PDF)

Please note that the accuracy range of Prometheus digital hygrometer is +/-3%. You can purchase a new Prometheus digital hygrometer/thermometer from our authorized dealers or from our website.

1. Apply distilled water through the slots in the front of Prometheus Optima Humidifier . Or, you can pour Distilled Water into a container and soak the Optima Humidifier. We recommend soaking, as it more effectively introduces the Distilled Water into the Optima Humidifier and also saves water.

2. Continue this process until the foam inside Prometheus Optima Humidifier is saturated and the Distilled Water spills out of the unit. Lay it flat for five minutes on a paper towel, or until all of the excess water has been drained. Wipe away any excess water on the exterior of Prometheus Optima Humidifier.

3. Attach the Prometheus Optima Humidifier to the magnetic plates inside the lid of the humidor.

4. Refill the Prometheus Optima Humidifier with DISTILLED WATER ONLY, and only when the humidity level falls below 68% -70%.

5. Apply Prometheus Special Care Solution (Prometheus SCS) to the Prometheus Optima Humidifier once every six months.

(3) More About Humidity and Cigars

In common with many organic substances, cigars dry out in the absence of humidity in the air, or absorb moisture when air humidity is high. They establish equilibrium with the humidity level of the air around them. Why is this important? A dry cigar burns too quickly. The temperature at which burning occurs is too high because it is not tempered by the natural moisture of the cigar. The smoke is hot and bitter, and the cigar becomes harsh. In contrast, a damp cigar does not burn easily. It becomes difficult to draw.

For a pleasant smoke, a cigar should contain a certain amount of moisture which corresponds to 13 - 14% of its total weight. At this level of moisture content, cigars burn smoothly; and the draw is easy. The aroma of tobacco is fully developed while the irritating effect of the resulting smoke is moderated by the moisture content of the cigar itself. The ideal moisture level of a cigar (13 - 14%) corresponds to a Relative Humidity of 70%.

The Relative Humidity (RH) is defined as the amount of moisture in the atmosphere in comparison with that at the saturation point at a given temperature. Water exposed to air gradually evaporates until the saturation point at which the air may retain the highest quantity of evaporated water. At the saturation point, the slightest drop in temperature will cause condensation. This is known as the dew point and corresponds to 100% RH. At 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit) and a normal atmospheric pressure, the amount of water present in the air at 100% RH is approximately 15 grams per cubic meter. At a Relative Humidity of 70%, the amount of evaporated water is approximately 10.5 grams per cubic meter.

If you place a water reservoir inside the humidor, the water will evaporate right away. As a result, the air inside of the humidor becomes quickly saturated by evaporated water and the humidity inside of the humidor will shoot up rapidly. However, as you open and close the humidor, the humidity inside the humidor will disappear rapidly. This means that your cigars will dry up shortly after all water in the reservoir has completely evaporated.

In this kind of environment, your cigars will go through sudden humidity changes. Many humidors come with a humidifier containing a foam, which merely soaks up water and lets it evaporate rapidly just like the water reservoir example noted above.

The Prometheus Optima humidifier comes pretreated with our proprietary Special Control Solution (SCS), which controls the evaporation of distilled water. Used in conjunction with our Prometheus Optima Humidifier, the evaporation is controlled and takes place only when the Relative Humidity falls below 68% - 70%.

Your Prometheus Optima Humidifier comes sealed in plastic to preserve this pre-treatment status. Please do not break the air-tight seal until you are ready to use it. After you open the seal, please consult the directions above about how to activate it using Distilled Water.

We advise you to treat your Prometheus Optima humidifier with our Special Care Solution (Prometheus SCS) once every six months so that your Prometheus Optima will continuously deliver controlled evaporation. You can purchase Prometheus Special Care Solution (Prometheus SCS) from our authorized dealers or from our web site.

(4) Temperature, Weather and Tobacco Pests

Humidors can be impacted by the surrounding environmental conditions if care is not taken to keep them out of direct sunlight, exposure to the outdoors or other dangers. If exposed to high exterior humidity, the humidity inside your humidor can go up significantly. If the interior humidity of your humidor rises above 70%, you can leave the humidor lid open until the humidity reading goes down.

In addition, please make sure that your humidor is kept in the temperature range of 68 - 70 degrees Fahrenheit (20 - 21 degrees Celsius). During the winter cold, do not put your Prometheus humidor next to a heater. During the summer heat, try to keep your Prometheus humidor in an air-conditioned room which maintains a temperature range of 68°F - 70°F (20°C - 21°C).

If the humidity and temperature of your humidor move above the ideal range (68% - 70% and 68°F - 70°F), tobacco beetles, which exist in larvae form inside of tobacco leaves, can hatch. If this happens, you will see small, circular pinholes in your cigars as evidence of tobacco beetle infestation. In as little as two days, a full-fledged beetle infestation can destroy every cigar in your humidor.

If a beetle infestation occurs, immediately discard all of your cigars with the circular pinholes. Put the remaining cigars without the pinholes into a sealed plastic bag and place it in your freezer for 72 hours in order to kill the tobacco beetles and their larvae. After 72 hours, move the bag of cigars to the refrigerator for one day, and then back to your humidor. This extra step will protect your cigars from the shock of sudden temperature change.

Before you put these cigars back in your humidor, clean the inside of your humidor with a paper or cotton towel dampened with Distilled Water.

(5) Cleaning your Prometheus Humidor

Standard Finish : Clean the exterior surfaces of your Prometheus Humidor with a clean cotton towel and rubbing alcohol as directed. First, gently wipe the towel over the entire exterior to remove any dust, being careful not to scratch the surface. Then, wet your towel with a small amount of rubbing alcohol, and wipe the outside surface gently to remove finger prints and any other stains.

Satin Finish : Many years ago, some models of Prometheus humidors were made with satin finish. If yours is satin-finished, use a clean cotton towel and gently wipe the outer surface to remove dust and oils. Do not use rubbing alcohol or any cleaning solution on Prometheus satin finished humidors or damage will occur.

In order to clean the interior, use fine sandpaper to remove any stains. Please make sure to sand in the direction of the wood grain, as sanding against the grain leaves scratches.

The inside veneer of Prometheus humidors is made of mahogany. Some humidors are lined with Spanish cedar, but we prefer mahogany because it will not affect the flavor of your cigars where Spanish cedar can impart a cedar taste and aroma. Spanish cedar, if not properly treated, can also bleed sap, where mahogany does not.

(6) Protecting the Humidor lid from warping

Prometheus stands behind its humidors and if a Prometheus humidor has any manufacturing defect, we will repair it at no charge according to our warranty. However, if a humidor lid warps due to improper maintenance by a dealer or consumer, the warped lid will not be covered by the Prometheus Humidor Warranty.

In order to prevent a humidor lid from warping, do not place the humidor under direct sunlight or track or spot lighting. Moreover, if your humidor experiences dramatic temperature changes, the lid of the humidor will also warp. During the winter, do not place your humidor in a cold room, or next to a heater.  During the summer, prevent your humidor from being exposed to direct sunlight.
